We thought it would be the war to end all wars…

On this day, exactly 70 years ago, after the deaths of tens of millions, including the attempted genocide of the Jewish Race by the NAZI's, the destruction of large swaths of Europe and Asia, after two atomic bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the Japanese government finally surrendered unconditionally, ending World War II.

Unfortunately it wasn’t the end of war, just the end of the last war we really won…which led to the Cold War, Korea, Vietnam, and now it’s ISIS and talk of re-engaging in Iraq and Syria even as we still fight in Afghanistan…But what I really want to talk about today is the political wars raging right now in this country…And specifically how the Republicans are being suckered into re-fighting the War on Women.

Just when the party promised that this time would be different. That this time the focus would not be on social issues, but rather on the economy and national security, on political competence and character, I’m going to argue on my WABC radio show this morning how the Planned Parenthood scandal is suckering the GOP into a fight they can’t win.

If, as some conspiracy theorists insist, Donald Trump is a stealth, stalking horse for Hillary Clinton, encouraged by her and her husband to run so that Trump would disrupt and decay the Republican field, I say that the entire Planned Parenthood fetal tissue scandal might as well be a stalking horse designed to destroy the GOP’s chances of getting the women’s vote.

Although the issue is deeply felt by the sincerely religious conservative base of the Republican Party, survey after survey shows broad support for a woman’s right to choose whether to keep her baby or terminate her pregnancy. Women don’t want the state to make the decision. They want the pregnant women to make the decision, within the limitations spelled out in Roe versus Wade, which is the law of the land.

Yesterday, my Fox News colleagues on ‘The Five’ insisted that the revulsion generated by undercover video showing callous disregard for the humanity of aborted fetuses by Planned Parenthood staffers is not about abortion. My friends say their disgust is over the obscenity of the group’s sales of the fetal body parts like they were selling sausages or hub caps.

I strongly disagreed on last night’s edition of ‘The Five.’

All the videos did was force us to confront the harsh reality that abortion is always distasteful. Nobody wants to think about what an abortion really entails. It’s hard to wrap our minds around it and that’s why we hate when pro-life activists do things like show us those graphic, blood-dripping pictures of aborted fetuses.

But that doesn’t change the fact that a majority of Americans believe abortion is a limited constitutional right that should stay that way. And now, with all this talk about de-funding Planned Parenthood to punish the abortion-provider for what those awful videos reveal, and to shut down the government on September 30th unless Planned Parenthood is de-funded, the GOP is being set up.

For all the talk about the party wanting to court the female vote and deflate the Democrat’s War on Women propaganda, Republicans are falling into the trap of re-fighting a lost cause.
