Space Race Crazy

As if we needed any more evidence of how race-crazy we’ve become, did you see the trailer for the new Star Wars: The Force Awakens? It aired during Monday Night’s dismal Giants Eagles game, which was an embarrassment for the New York team and the whole town.
Anyway, after the trailer aired a couple of dramatic things happened. First as you’ve heard, even though the movie doesn’t open for two months on December 18th, the web sites that sell tickets, like Fandango, crashed; along with the servers of the major theater chains. Which was great; I still remember waiting in line on May 25th 1977 in Los Angeles to see the original movie.
I also remember that there were no black people in the first Star Wars…Billy Dee Williams’ Lando Calrissian was a welcome addition in the various sequels, but for a while there it looked like there were no black folks in outer space.
38 years later, the 7th movie in the epic series is now being threatened with a massive boycott for the opposite reason. The male lead is a black guy, a British actor named John Boyega who taunted the initial wave of critics to his casting by saying, “Get used to it,” on Nov. 29, 2014, on an Instagram post.
Director J.J. Abrams is indeed a progressive political activist, helping raise $750,000 for the Democratic Party at a fundraiser at his home two weeks ago in Pacific Palisades, California. President Obama attended the lavish event, which guests paid $33,400 a pop to attend.
Because of his politics and the controversial casting, an online movement has begun to boycott “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” for being anti-white.
Here’s some of crap being posted:
“‪#‎BoycottStarWarsVII‬ because it is anti-white propaganda promoting ‪#‎whitegenocide‬,” which comes from something called End Cultural Marxism.
Another says, “A friend in L.A. said ‪#‎StarWarsVII‬ is basically ‘Black Lives Matter in Space.’ Jewish activist JJ Abrams is an anti-white nut.”
The Hollywood Reporter and other celebrity sites have been collecting the racially oriented tweets like one from a user they identify as Captain Confederacy saying, “(they) complain about White artists ‘misappropriating’ culture created by blacks but then celebrate a non-White Star Wars.”
“It’s nothing more than a social justice propaganda piece that alienates its core audience of young white males,” another user tweeted, according to the Hollywood Reporter website.
And we’re talking about a movie here, albeit an iconic movie. Rather than drag in all this stupid stuff about contemporary race politics, isn’t it sad that folks just can’t sit back and enjoy the ride, back to a long time ago and a galaxy far far away?
So here’s my question, would we even be having this conversation if Barack Obama was not the president?
